San Cristobal is the easternmost island of the Galápagos archipelago and therefore one of the oldest, as the earth’s crust moves over the hot spot that fuels the volcanoes. Its town Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is the political capital of the Gálapagos province, and second in importance to Puerto Ayora when it comes to tourism. It has several easily accessible visitor sites, e.g. the Frigatebird Hill or La Lobería (for free, no guide needed), directly connected to town by paved pathways.

Enjoy your time at San Cristóbal with a short 30 min. walk to La Lobería to observe the Galápagos Sea Lion, the most emblematic animal of the island, hanging around lazily on the rocky beach. The way starts right after the school, before the airport. Watch for Marine Iguanas, Yellow Warblers, finches and the Great Frigate bird already on the way to the beach. The Frigatebird Hill is located northwest of the town. It’s recommended to start the walk up from the Interpretation Center, following the trail for approx. 2 hours across a mixed forest of palo santo incense trees, matazarno, candelabra cactus and yellow-flowered cordia. You’ll see dozens of great frigate birds sitting or nesting in the trees, yellow warblers, lava lizards, pelicans and different kind of finches. You’ll have fantastic panoramic views from different viewpoints. Snorkel fans should carry their equipment to explore the bay.
