Floreana Island

Floreana, walking and snorkeling

Floreana is the southernmost island in the Galapagos archipelago. While it is no longer possible to see the island’s central volcano because of advanced erosion, the smaller (parasitic) cones that developed along its flanks are very much still evident. Along Floriana’s sandy beaches, grows Beach Morning Glory and succulents like Sesuvium, adjacent to which there is a good opportunity to observe Marine Iguanas (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) and Green Sea Turtles. Further inland can be found Incense Trees (Bursera graveolens), Parkinsonias, Lantana and other dry shrubs. Despite the presence of such plants, Floreana is the only island that has two sources of fresh water something that, early on, made the island particularly attractive to settlers. Today, Floreana has some 180 inhabitants, the lowest number of residents on any of our islands but, as you walk around, you’re drawn to the history of human endeavor in the archipelago – a visit here providing an authentic representation of remote living in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In addition to its beautiful flora and fauna, sites such as Pirate’s Cave provide Floreana with a magical and mysterious atmosphere, this is an island that should not be missed!

The day tour starts with a 2-hour speedboat ride from Puerto Ayora to Puerto Velasco Ibarra, the main village on Floreana.

From the main pier, you first take the bus to the highlands to the Asilo de Paz the first place of human settlement on the island. The path to the pirate caves (where probably the first person in the archipelago was born) and freshwater springs leads through lush vegetation and is regularly visited by eating tortoises. The settlement history of the islands comes to life in the guide’s stories about this special place. Times when the island has been crisscrossed by narrow paths and when the way from the water source to the beach meant a whole day’s walk.

After a walk of about 1.5 hours, the bus takes you back to the coastal village for lunch. Then you walk a bit west along the coast, past the Black Beach, to La Lobería, a wonderful beach where you can snorkel. Green turtles, sea lions, but also occasionally the Galapagos penguin stay in this beautiful little bay. After snorkeling, the group heads back to the boat to return to Santa Cruz Island.
