WRECK CARAGUA (THE CARAGUA)

This trip, which visits a wreck, offers a completely different kind dining to that found elsewhere in the archipelago, and presents a truly unique experience.

The Caragua is less than a ten minute boat ride from the port of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno and is 100 m long German steamship which sank in 1916. Coal from her fuel reserve can still be found on the seabed and is easily mistaken for rock!

Historically, the vessel made twice yearly trips to the Galapagos, laden with food. Her support role in aiding local development is an important part of San Cristobal,’s history, and appropriately, over time, The Caragua has become a significant part of the island’s underwater heritage.

In addition to the well-preserved ship, you will find many animals around the wreck. Larger examples include stingrays, sea turtles, and sea lions, smaller ones, nudibranchs, seahorses, octopuses, moray eels and, with a little luck, the funny-looking red-lipped batfish. Notes - This dive does not require participants to be trained for wreck diving training. The trip is usually offered in combination with a dive at Las Tijeretas.
