The Galapagos
Kayaking
Kayaking allows you to explore intriguing remote areas of the inhabited main islands and combines adventure, tranquility and connection with nature. In our crystal-clear waters and richly inhabited coastline, the biodiversity of the islands unfolds before your eyes, as is portrayed in the entry below relating to a trip on Santa Cruz Island between Punta Estrada and Franklin Bay.
This kayak tour between between Punta Estrada and Franklin Bay starts at Playa de los Alemanes and soon arrives at Divine islet where marine iguanas, different sea birds, colorful sally lightfoot crabs and an abundance of reef life can be seen from the surface. Taking the route to Punta Estrada provides for blue-footed boobies, lava gulls, pelicans, frigate birds, Galapagos shearwaters and tropical birds that visit seasonally.
Further along the coastal profile is one of the ionic sites of this tour, the Canal del Amor. This location is admired for its colorful scenery and tranquility. As you arrive, you will notice how the intensely coloured turquoise water, the cliffs of black volcanic rock, the exotic vegetation, and the varied wildlife, which includes nocturnal seagulls, black tip sharks and sea lions, all combine to make this site such a unique and beautiful place.
The tour continues along the shoreline to the mangrove habitat bordering Franklin Bay, a favorite feeding ground for sea turtles, rays, sharks and seabirds. If you are lucky, you will see these animals grazing as you are carried along by the gentle current that sweeps the bay. A family of sea lions lives nearby, and they will often join your trip - a real treat!
An (optional) snorkeling session at a safe location next to Iguana islet can be booked as a complement to this adventure. During this, participants anchor their kayaks and enter the water in a controlled mannerto explore a great variety of underwater life, including sea cucumbers, pencil urchins, sea turtles, surgeon fish, damselfish, parrot fish, rainbow fish, and small rays - all common visitors. The tour ends with the return to Playa de los Alemanes.
